The Science Junkie Schools Shows are a schools adaptation of our festival shows. After performing the original Science Junkie Festival Show at venues across the UK, it was apparent that there was a real call for this type of show in schools and for school audiences. The Science Junkies developed a show that is aimed at KS3 and KS4 pupils and can be performed in a school hall. It was designed to be around an hour long, but it was important that it could evolve into a longer or shorter show (by 5 or 10 minutes) to fit into existing lesson plans that are set by the schools.
These shows are usually performed by ONE of the Science Junkies. With a greater focus on the science learnt in the classroom, its a fantastic way to enhance the lessons taught in schools. Huw says “we find that the Science Junkie SCHOOLS Show really gets students enthused about science. We don’t try to specifically teach anything, but rather we offer a context & application for classroom concepts, encouraging the students to engage more in science lessons”. The show follows the exact same format as its larger festival going brother, but links more closely to the National Curriculum for Key Stages 3 and 4 in a range of subjects. With definitive Key Messages and Learning Objectives, the Schools Show tries to deliver the excitement of unrequited science whilst walking the tightrope of the national curriculum and does it well: Howard of Effingham School had the show and said:
In a survey done with schools students in March 2011, where over 3580 students saw the show:
And here are some of their comments:
We truly believe that these types of interactive science show can be a fantastic compliment to the schools curriculum and can really show students the uses and worth of STEM subjects in everyday life.
