Recognising there was a need for role models in not only science but also outdoor adventure too, Huw and Greg decided to launch Science Junkie. The Original Science Junkie Show was the first pillar of the Science Junkie empire and is its flagship show. Huw says
The Science Junkie LIVE Festival shows are an intuitive blend of science and adrenaline filled sport and adventure. These live, interactive shows engage with audiences of all sizes. With live science experiments performed on stage and demonstrations that the audience as individuals and as a whole can get involved with, this is one of the most comprehensive science shows you will come across. With the groundbreaking and innovative ‘Science Junkie Cube’, a 2m high metal frame designed for big science experiments, the Science Junkies are pushing the limits of what Science Shows can really do. They mix brand new experiments with adaptations of the old classics to bring to life in a 1 hour show, how science really effects us in sport and everyday life. Greg says
The Science Junkie LIVE Festival Shows were designed to create a positive experience under the banner of science. Huw says “You can learn stuff from this show, I learnt a lot just writing it, but the main goal is for people to see the show and think wow, I had fun, and that was science.” The Original 'Extreme Sports Show' has been performed right around the UK with sell out crowds at Cheltenham, Wrexham and Cambridge Science Festival. It’s toured far and wide to Manchester and Green Man Festivals too, and it’s only in it’s second year of running.
Now, the Science Junkies are extending the Live Show Family to include 'Science Junkie: In the Zone' and 'Survival Junkie: The Science of Adventure'. The guys are looking to take them to the science festivals of the UK and also to the music and sports festivals too. Greg says “The live shows are special because they can be at science festivals and encourage people to head outdoors, but equally be performed at sports festivals and give people an insight into the wonderful world of science”.
Wrexham Science Festival said, after last years event:
“We believe that live shows are one of the best ways to convey the beauty of scientific thinking to an audience of any age, and that’s the point, a live presenter can tailor a show to ANY age”.
Big Bang Wales 2011
“We both wanted to look at a bunch of sports that were not only really cool, but had a ton of science in them. In these extreme sports we found we could draw out everything from gravitational accellerartion in sky diving, to hydrodynamic forces in surfing. The key is though, this is all the stuff you learn in school, just presented through big science stunts live on stage!”
Green Man Festival 2010 & 2011
“This science show is unrivalled in educational value and was fun, fresh, innovative and captivating. You managed to keep everyone's full attention and complete control of the audience through a blend of great showmanship and knowledge about science.”
“Thank you, it was a really good way to show us how science is everywhere”, “It was really enjoyable. The free running was really cool”.
